What is TDS on salary?
Tax deducted at source is the income tax your employer takes out of each month’s salary and pays to the government on your behalf. It is an advance against your final tax for the year, which you settle when you file your return.
How to use this calculator
- Enter your expected gross salary for the whole year, including any bonus.
- Add RSU or ESOP perquisites taxed this year.
- Choose your regime; for the old regime, enter your total deductions.
- Enter TDS deducted so far (from your payslips) and pick the current month.
How monthly TDS is worked out
TDS per month = (Tax for the year − TDS already deducted) ÷ Months left
Tax for the year uses the same slabs, rebate, surcharge and cess as the income tax calculator.
Worked example
Gross salary ₹18 lakh plus an RSU perquisite of ₹3 lakh, new regime, ₹70,000 already deducted, six months left: tax for the year is ₹2,14,500, so ₹1,44,500 remains, or₹24,083 a month.
Assumptions
- Your salary estimate for the year is right; employers re-estimate as pay changes.
- Old regime deductions are entered as one total, within their legal limits.
- Income from other employers this year is not included unless you add it to gross salary.
