Suggested sum insured

₹10 lakh

An estimate from the assumptions on the left, not a quote or a policy recommendation.

Estimated need, before rounding₹9,26,043
Rounded to a common cover size₹10,00,000
Cover you already have−₹0
Gap to fill₹10,00,000

The estimate adds 15% for each person beyond two, 20% if the eldest is 45 or older (50% at 60+), and grows the total by the medical cost rise you set.

What is health insurance cover?

The sum insured is the most a health policy will pay in a year. A family floater shares one sum insured across everyone covered.

How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the type of city where you would be treated.
  2. Enter the people covered and the age of the eldest.
  3. Replace the hospitalisation cost with a figure from a hospital near you.
  4. Set how many big claims a year to plan for, the medical cost rise and how many years ahead to plan.

How the estimate works

Need = cost of a major claim × claims a year × family factor × age factor × (1 + medical cost rise)years

Family factor adds 15% for each person beyond two; the age factor is 1.2 at 45+ and 1.5 at 60+. The result is rounded up to a common sum-insured size.

Assumptions

  • Default costs and factors are our assumptions, chosen to be easy to read and change; they are not market data.
  • This is an estimate, not a quote or advice on any policy.

Frequently asked questions

How much health cover do I need?

Enough to pay for a major hospitalisation, or more than one in a bad year, in the city where you would be treated, with room for medical costs to keep rising. The calculator turns those assumptions into a sum insured.

Where do the default costs come from?

They are our starting assumptions for each city type, not published statistics. Ask a hospital you would use for typical costs and enter those.

Why does the eldest person’s age matter?

Older people are more likely to be hospitalised, so we add a buffer: 20% at 45 or older and 50% at 60 or older. Change the inputs if this does not suit you.

Can I claim tax benefits on health insurance?

Under the old regime, premiums qualify for section 126 of the Income-tax Act, 2025 (the old 80D). See the section 80D calculator.

Does this recommend a policy?

No. It estimates a cover amount only and shows no premiums or insurers.
