What is in-hand salary?

In-hand (or take-home) salary is what reaches your bank account each month. It is your gross salary minus your own PF contribution, professional tax and the income tax your employer deducts (TDS). CTC is larger because it also counts money your employer spends on you that you don’t receive monthly: employer PF, gratuity and variable pay.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your annual CTC, or drag the slider.
  2. Add any variable pay that is part of the CTC and how often it is paid.
  3. Pick your state so professional tax is included.
  4. Open “Salary assumptions” to match your offer letter: basic %, PF and gratuity.
  5. Compare the new and old regime tabs; old-regime deductions go in their own section.

In-hand salary by CTC

Detailed breakdowns, with both regimes, PF and professional tax by state:

How in-hand salary is worked out

Your CTC is split into fixed pay and variable pay. Fixed pay is divided into basic, HRA and a special allowance after setting aside the employer’s PF, gratuity and any employer NPS. Your gross salary is basic + HRA + special allowance. Your monthly in-hand is gross salary minus your PF, professional tax and income tax.

In-hand = (Basic + HRA + Special) − Employee PF − Professional tax − Income tax ÷ 12

PF wage = max(Basic, 50% of gross) · PF = 12% × PF wage (or of ₹25,000 if capped)
Gratuity in CTC = PF wage × 15 ÷ 26 per year of service

Worked example: ₹12 lakh CTC in Bengaluru

Assumptions: no variable pay, basic 50% of CTC, HRA 40% of basic, employer PF and gratuity inside CTC, PF on full wages, new regime.

Basic₹50,000 a month
HRA₹20,000
Employer PF (12% of ₹50,000)₹6,000
Gratuity (15/26 of a month’s wages ÷ 12)₹2,404
Special allowance (balance)₹21,596
Gross salary₹91,596
Taxable income: ₹10,99,154 − ₹75,000 standard deduction₹10,24,154 a year
Income tax (rebate under s.156 covers it)₹0
Your PF and Karnataka professional tax−₹6,000 and −₹200
Monthly in-hand₹85,396

Assumptions you can change

  • Basic and HRA shares. Companies set these; check your offer letter. Defaults: basic 50% of fixed CTC, HRA 40% of basic.
  • Employer PF in CTC. Most private employers include it. PF is 12% of the PF wage, or 12% of ₹25,000 if your employer caps it at the statutory ceiling (₹15,000 before 17 September 2026).
  • Labour Code wage rule. On by default, because it is the law from 21 November 2025. Turn it off if your employer still calculates PF on basic only.
  • Gratuity in CTC. On by default. Many employers show it in CTC even though it is paid only when you leave after five years.
  • Professional tax. Only states whose rates we have checked against the state’s official schedule are listed. It is deductible only under the old regime.

What this calculator does not include

Reimbursements, meal cards, perquisites such as a company car, interest on PF above ₹2.5 lakh of your own contributions a year, and income other than salary. Monthly TDS is shown as an even split of the year’s tax; your employer may deduct more in some months.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my in-hand salary so much lower than CTC divided by 12?

CTC includes money you never see in your bank account each month: the employer’s PF contribution, gratuity, and any variable pay that is paid later or only if targets are met. From the gross salary that is left, your own PF (12%), professional tax and income tax (TDS) are deducted.

Is a salary of ₹12.75 lakh tax-free under the new regime?

Yes, if salary is your only income. The ₹75,000 standard deduction brings taxable income to ₹12 lakh, and the rebate under section 156 cancels tax up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income. Just above ₹12 lakh, marginal relief limits the tax to the amount by which income crosses ₹12 lakh.

How does the new EPF wage ceiling of ₹25,000 change my take-home?

The statutory ceiling rose from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month from 17 September 2026. If your employer calculates PF on the ceiling, your PF rises from ₹1,800 to ₹3,000 a month, so take-home falls by ₹1,200 while your PF savings grow. If PF is already calculated on your full basic, nothing changes.

What is the Labour Code 50% wage rule?

Under the Labour Codes in force since 21 November 2025, if allowances make up more than half of your total pay, the excess is added to “wages”. PF and gratuity are calculated on these wages, so a low basic no longer keeps PF small. Variable pay, ESOPs and reimbursements are not counted as wages.

Is variable pay taxed differently?

No. Bonus and variable pay are taxed at your normal slab rate together with salary. Employers usually deduct the extra tax in the month it is paid, which is why a payout looks smaller than expected. This calculator shows each payout after its share of the extra tax.

Which regime does my employer use for TDS?

The new regime is the default for tax year 2026-27 (section 202(1) of the Income-tax Act, 2025). The old regime applies only if you opt for it under section 202(4). Without business income, you can choose afresh each year when you file your return.
