What is a step-up SIP?

A step-up SIP starts with one amount and increases it every year. It lets your investing keep pace with your income.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose a mode: value, goal or time needed.
  2. Set the starting amount, how often you invest and the expected return.
  3. Choose whether the yearly increase is a percentage or a fixed amount, and how much.
  4. Turn on tax or inflation if you want those views.

Worked example

Starting at ₹10,000 a month for 20 years at 12%: a flat SIP invests ₹24,00,000 and grows to ₹91.99 lakh. Raising it by 10% a year invests ₹68.73 lakh and grows to ₹1.86 crore.

Effect of the yearly step-up

₹10,000 a month to start, 20 years, 12% a year.

Yearly step-upInvestedValue
0%₹24 lakh₹91.99 lakh
5%₹39.68 lakh₹1.28 crore
10%₹68.73 lakh₹1.86 crore
15%₹1.23 crore₹2.86 crore

How the calculation works

Instalment in year y = P × (1 + s)y − 1 (or P + s × (y − 1) for a fixed amount); each grows at i per period until the end.

Assumptions

  • Constant yearly return; the step-up happens once a year.
  • Tax view uses the equity-fund rules described on the SIP calculator page.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this figure lower than some other SIP calculators?

Many calculators divide the yearly return by 12 (12% becomes 1% a month), which actually compounds to about 12.68% a year. We treat the return you enter as the true yearly growth rate, so the results are slightly lower and more conservative.

What is a step-up SIP?

A SIP whose instalment rises every year, by a percentage or a fixed amount, usually in line with your pay rises.

Percentage or fixed amount: which should I use?

A percentage grows faster over time because each increase is larger than the last. A fixed amount is easier to plan around. Try both above.

When does the increase happen?

Here, once a year: instalments in year 2 are higher than in year 1, and so on.

How is it taxed?

The same as a regular SIP: each instalment has its own holding period for capital gains.
