What are FDs and RDs?
A fixed deposit locks a lump sum for a set period at a set rate. A recurring deposit takes a fixed amount every month for a set period. Both pay a known rate when you open them.
How to use this calculator
- Choose fixed or recurring deposit.
- Enter the amount (or monthly deposit), the rate and the period.
- For an FD, pick how often interest compounds.
How the calculation works
FD: A = P × (1 + r/n)n × t · RD: A = Σ R × (1 + r/4)4 × months held ÷ 12
Worked example
₹1 lakh FD for 5 years at 7% compounded quarterly matures at ₹1,41,478. ₹5,000 a month in an RD for 2 years at 7% matures at ₹1,29,099.
Effect of compounding frequency
₹1 lakh, 5 years, 7%.
| Compounding | Maturity |
|---|---|
| Monthly | ₹1,41,763 |
| Quarterly | ₹1,41,478 |
| Half-yearly | ₹1,41,060 |
| Yearly | ₹1,40,255 |
| Not compounded | ₹1,35,000 |
